The 7 levels of artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be explored through seven different typologies, each with its own characteristics and potential. Here is a more detailed description of each:

1. Narrow Artificial Intelligence (Narrow AI)

Narrow AI, or “weak AI,” is the only type of AI that currently exists. It specializes in well-defined tasks, such as speech recognition or computer vision, and operates within specific limits. While “narrow,” it can surpass human capabilities in specific tasks, but it has no true understanding or consciousness.

2. General Artificial Intelligence (AGI)

AGI, or “strong AI,” is a theoretical concept that refers to a machine with the ability to understand, learn and apply its skills in a wide range of contexts, just as a human would. This type of AI would be able to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, understand complex ideas, learn quickly, and learn from different experiences.

3. Superior Artificial Intelligence (Super AI)

Super AI goes beyond AGI, possessing reasoning, problem-solving, and creativity abilities that surpass those of any human. This form of AI may also have its own emotions and desires, raising significant ethical and philosophical questions.

4. Reactive Machine AI

This form of AI focuses on specific tasks and does not have the ability to “memorize” past experiences. An example is IBM's Deep Blue gaming system. These AIs react to specific inputs with predetermined responses or actions.

5. Limited Memory AI

Limited Memory AI includes systems that can use past experiences to inform future decisions. Examples include self-driving cars that observe other vehicles around them and use this information to make real-time decisions.

6. Theory of Mind AI

This type of AI still remains in the theoretical sphere and refers to systems that understand and can react to human emotions. These systems would be able to interpret human emotional reactions and adapt their behavior accordingly.

7. Self-Aware AI

Self-aware AI represents the theoretical pinnacle of artificial intelligence. These systems would have self-awareness, emotions and awareness, making them almost indistinguishable from humans in terms of their capacity for social and emotional interaction.

In conclusion, while Narrow AI, Reactive Machine AI and Limited Memory AI are consolidated realities, AGI, Super AI, Theory of Mind AI and Self-Aware AI remain spheres of theoretical research. Understanding these different typologies allows us to evaluate the current state of AI and the future prospects of this fascinating field.

The world is changing and those who are successful learn to innovate their own products along with their own processes and at people.
